Meeting Wasim Akram, a cricketer & T1D

I was in grade 8 and it was a regular school day for me. I returned home and mom surprised me with an unexpected news. There was a conference going to be conducted by Roche Diagnostics (the manufacturer of Accu Chek) and my doctor had invited me to be a part of it. And that was not it. Roche had invited Wasim Akram, the legendary fast pace bowler who himself is a type 1 diabetic, for the event. When I heard that, I was overjoyed. I wasn’t really a cricket fan but I had watched his matches with dad during the 2003 ICC World Cup, and who would get a chance to meet such a celebrity player? Who would get a chance to see him personally and get motivated and inspired by his determination to beat this disease? For a moment, yes I was glad I was a type 1. I was one of the few kids getting this opportunity and I was ecstatic!   The event was in a few days time. They had sent me a ball and a bat embossed with Wasim Akram’s signature. I’ve still kept them safe with me. My friends were delighted to see them. When we reached the place, there were a few other diabetic kids with their parents. When Wasim Akram arrived, their was applause and cheering. Roche was launching a new glucometer through the event and every kid got one from the legend’s hand on the stage. It was such a blissful moment. He was smiling at all kids and gave them autographs. He talked about type 1 diabetes and how he managed it. Looking at him, it felt like nothing is impossible for me. I can dream, believe and achieve. I can touch the sky! Sadly, I couldn’t get a picture of the event due to some issues or I’d have put it up for you to see. You can have a look at other ones below! 🙂

  1. I clearly remember that day when you came to school and narrated the day and said “I had never imagined something good will happen with my life”. And here you are, I am sure doing very well for yourself and many others!
